I am so glad that we were able to experience an olive oil tasting while in Greece. There truly is not a better place to do it. I really was not sure how this type of tasting worked. I just assumed we would dip some bread and try it out. Simple right? My thoughts were far from what happened. The tasting is so in depth in a way that you would not expect. I can fully say that everyone needs to have this experience when in Greece. If you are on Corfu Island, then you cannot miss The Governor’s Mill. By choosing to visit here we knew we would be supporting a local and family business.

They start the tour by going over the process of how they get the olives and how many are produced each year. Every year there is always the need of more to be produced as consumption rates continue to increase. It is interesting to hear the history of olive oil production and the different techniques used over the years. After this we learned about which color olives produce what taste. A good olive will have fruitiness, spiciness, and a pleasant bitterness. Once we learned about this, we then moved on to tasting the olive oil. There is a specific method to how you taste the olive oil to make sure you experience the full flavors. I’m not going to give much away on this process so you will have to go on a tasting to see what I am talking about.

Once the tour was complete, I was wishing I could bring home bottles of olive oil. My suitcase unfortunately was not going to allow for this, so I was a bit disappointed. However, I learned that they have a distributor in the U.S. so I took a card so I could order once home. I did pick up face cream and some soap with olive oil in it. They have tasting kits that you can bring back as well.

I know I keep saying how great this tasting was, but I am so serious. We had George showing us around and leading the tasting. It was so noticeable how passionate he was about his family’s business. He made the tour interactive and so enjoyable that I will be telling everyone I can. Visiting their mill was a highlight of our trip in Corfu! I am excited to order some olive oil once home and share it with friends and family.
